One of the joys of being a designer-for-hire is when you get to work with people you genuinely like — and Gillie (aka CG Hatton, founder of Harvey Duckman Presents) is absolutely one of those people.
Gillie and I go way back — we met through Tournament Paintball in the early 2000s, where I was knocking out front covers for a paintball magazine, and she was already a force to be reckoned with. Fast-forward twenty-odd years and we’re still working together — just now it’s less high-speed paint and more high-stakes fiction.
Harvey Duckman Presents is a unique beast. A collection of speculative fiction anthologies that range from steampunk to sci-fi, noir to post-apocalyptic weirdness. Each book comes with its own challenge, vibe, and audience — and every single cover design has been a completely different brief.
From the mechanical madness of Folly & Madness to the cyber-grit of Justice for Pluto, the cold shadows of Rum & Rosemary to the pulpy punch of Flash!Mob 24/25, these covers let me stretch into different visual worlds while still keeping a strong series identity.
It’s been a joy to explore each new tone and twist. No two are the same — and that’s the point. The Harvey Duckman series is all about celebrating stories that don’t fit in a box… and luckily, Gillie gives me the same creative freedom with the covers.
Outside of Harvey, I’ve also illustrated a couple of books for other authors — but that’s a story for another post…
